Hotel Rendez Vous

Hotel Rendez Vous is a three-star hotel with one of the most enviable addresses in Montenegro: right on a small square inside the walls of Kotor's Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site ringed by the churches of St Luke, St Nikola and St Ozana. Guests rate the location an excellent 9.4, and it's easy to see why: the medieval gates, the cathedral and the fortress path are all on the doorstep.

The rooms are done in soft pastel shades, with hardwood floors and views over the surrounding historic stone buildings. All come with air conditioning, satellite TV and a minibar, and are kept simple and comfortable in keeping with the building's age and character.

Downstairs, a restaurant serves fresh Adriatic seafood, Montenegrin dishes and international classics, while the bar spills out onto a terrace set directly on the square. Free Wi-Fi runs throughout, an airport shuttle can be arranged on request, and the pedestrian old town lies just beyond the door.

Plan your stay at Hotel Rendez Vous

On the main square of Kotor's walled Old Town, steps from the cathedral, the city gates and the climb to San Giovanni Fortress.

The hotel's rooms

Hotel Rendez Vous has eight room types, from a compact single up to studios and a city-view suite that sleep four. Most are doubles, twins and triples, so couples, friends and small families all have a fit. Every room keeps the same pastel, hardwood-floored style, with air conditioning, satellite TV and a minibar as standard. Sizes run from 10 to 30 square metres, and a couple of the top-floor triples add a rooftop window that pulls in extra light. What sets each apart is space and layout: pick a studio or suite for room to spread out, a double or twin for a straightforward city break, or the economy double to keep costs down without leaving the walls.

Location and what to see

Getting there

Hotel Rendez Vous sits right inside the walls of Kotor's Old Town, on the small Pjaca od mlijeka square, a car-free warren of stone lanes where vehicles cannot reach the door: you arrive on foot through one of the medieval gates. The nearest airport is Tivat (TIV), about 10 kilometres away and roughly 20 minutes by taxi; the property can arrange a shuttle on request. Podgorica and Dubrovnik airports are each around 90 kilometres away for wider connections. Kotor's bus station is a five-minute, 500-metre walk from the gates, with frequent intercity coaches along the coast and Blue Line local buses to Perast and Risan. Kotor is also a busy cruise port, with ships mooring right opposite the ramparts. There is no on-site car park, though parking is available at a nearby lot; given the pedestrian centre, most guests simply explore on foot, and a wheeled bag helps over the cobbles.

What to see

The hotel opens onto the heart of a UNESCO-listed town, so the main sights are quite literally at the door. The Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, consecrated in 1166, along with a maze of squares, churches and Venetian palazzi, is a short stroll away. The unmissable climb is the fortress of San Giovanni (Sveti Ivan): around 1,350 steps zig-zag up the hillside to sweeping views over the fjord-like bay, so go early morning or near sunset to dodge the heat and carry water. For a classic half-day trip, take the coastal bus to Perast and a water taxi to the island church of Our Lady of the Rocks. Beyond Perast, Lovćen National Park and the old royal capital of Cetinje reward a longer drive inland. May, June and September bring the best balance of warm weather and thinner crowds; midsummer and cruise-ship mornings are the busiest, so start your walls walk early.
